Tips on How to Get the Most Out of Your Air Purifier

Clean indoor air has never been in greater demand than in the past year and a half. If used properly, an air purifier will help maintain good indoor air quality at home. In today’s post, heating and cooling company OK Heating and Air Conditioning shares tips on how to get the most out of your air purifier.

How Air Purifiers Work

There are many  makes and models of air purifiers available on the market today, and they all operate similarly. First, an intake fan pulls air from the room, then the air passes through one or more purification stages and a blower expels clean air. Most air purifiers utilize HEPA (high-efficiency particulate absorbing) filters, while some feature a chamber that exposes the air to UV rays.

Air purifiers repeat this cleansing cycle until the desired level of indoor air quality is reached. Most air purifiers have sensors that detect the concentration of indoor air pollutants, and can be programmed to automatically turn off when this level is reached.

Tips on Using an Air Purifier

Check out the following tips on how to get the most out of your air purifier.

Don’t run it all the time — Unlike an air cooler, air purifiers aren’t meant to be run all the time, nor is there any benefit to doing so. In fact, keeping it running all the time can increase wear, as well as raise your utility costs. Instead, run your air purifier when everyone is at home so they can all benefit from the clean air. Depending on the type of air purifier, you may need to run it up to several hours per day.

Keep the windows and doors closed — Air purifiers are more efficient when they’re only cleaning indoor air. If you need to ventilate your home using your windows, run the air purifier before or after the windows are closed.

Vacuum regularly — Regular cleaning can help reduce indoor air pollutants like dust and dander. This will further help reduce particles that would clog the air purifier’s filters, as well as help prolong its service life.
